Glyos Hitting Stores - Bit Figs in Vending Machines

As you no doubt have read, SSM Vending has been distributing the new Onell Design Bit Figs, Glyos compatible figures roughly the same size as Mordles or Hasbro's Fighter Pods/Spider Pods toys.  They're about an inch each, and make excellent puppets.

Each figure comes in a capsule and will probably be either 25 or 50 cents at a machine near you.  SSM distributes to all sorts of places, and I've seen their machines at grocery stores and (unless I'm mistaken) Toys R Us stores.  I don't know if it's regional or a chain-wide deal, so I would suggest checking your local machines for the SSM branding - it should be on the graphical insert cards.  If you see it, that means you've got a good chance of possibly finding these.

Each set includes 5 sculpts in painted and unpainted varieties - and there are some color variants.

There are two series - Ninja and Animal.  I picked up a big bag of each since the distributor was within driving distance.  Here are some comments.

Animal Series
My bag did not include a complete set - I got Pup, Bun, Duck, and Pig in painted and unpainted varieties.  My bag had unpainted Kit, but not painted Kits - rather, it had Pup in Kit colors!  What did you get in yours?

Ninja Series
My bag did not include a complete set here, either.  It appears there may be as many as 50 varieties - 5 sculpts in 5 colors, each painted or unpainted.   In my bag, Ku the Skeleton seems to be the most common sculpt, with the orange color dominating the bag.

Overall
They're small and cute, and not as rubbery as other similarly sized figures.  They fit perfectly on Glyos figure pegs by design, and make adorable puppets or peg legs.  I'd suggest dropping a buck in a vending machine if you find them.  If you order them by mail, be sure to ask for a header card with figures - each has 5 painted figures, and you'll want those.

These are notable in that they are - as far as I can tell - the first Glyos/Onell Design figures to get national distribution at big stores.   The vending machines keep the prices low, and it cracks open the door for more neat ideas.  Just a few years ago we were talking about the democratization of designer figures through a lower-price OMFG line, and now Onell Design has discovered that you can give the things away.   Collecting them all, on the other hand, may prove tricky.

I like 'em.  I don't know if I'll buy series after series of new colorways, but if we get some glow I'll buy more of these.   Heck, if you get extras it's not like Halloween isn't around the corner.  Kids still like toys, right?

Review: Onell Design Glyos Crayboth Diversus

Onell Design Glyos Crayboth Diversus Action FigureSidekick figures are more or less commonplace in the Glyos universe, as each series focuses on a new color of plastic and runs a number of new and existing figures in that color. Once in a while you get a cool crossover too, which means a figure like Obritron Diversus [FOTD #1,492] can get a little companion like Crayboth Diversus. Decorated vaguely like the Metaluna Mutant from This Island Earth. Due to the painted figures being developed apart from Onell Design, rarely is there a match - but we've got one now!

Review: Four Horsemen Power Lords Ggrapptikk Grunt Action Figure

Four Horsemen Power Lords Ggrapptikk Grunt Action FigureSince this line more or less ended in 2014 (minus a couple of recolors), I wasn't sure if or when I'd get to the Ggrapptikk Grunt. Truth be told, I was kind of hoping the line would just die and I assume that it did. We see occasional updates from the Four Horsemen in forums or elsewhere saying that it isn't, but we haven't seen a new body type debut as a production toy since the first figures hit in 2013. This was a line with a lot of promise and fanfare, debuting near the end of the less ambitious Outer Space Men figures which, I still can't believe it, actually completed the original characters from 50 years ago. Plus the prototype second series. Plus a smattering of new characters. Power Lords updated 2 of the original figures, with numerous recolors and precolors of those molds basically grinding down any goodwill in the line's run. I'm not saying I wouldn't buy a Sydot if we ever got one, but I've got eight flavors of these 4-armed buggers and truth be told I'd have been happy with just one.

Review: Onell Design Outer Space Men Orbitron Diversus

Onell Design Outer Space Men Orbitron Diversus Action FigureLong pauses are as much a part of The Outer Space Men as space itself. The original line took a nap after its 1966 debut until 2010, and every year we'd see a surge of freshness around July with the line usually being over and done with by January until the next July. Selling out faster than you can say "give Uncle Scrotor a hug," Orbitron Diversus was the last new releases were the final "Infinity Edition" figures from February 2014. In that time, the rights to The Outer Space Men reverted back to the brand's owners, which means you're probably not going to see a heck of a lot of new sculpting but you might see more new releases now that the ball is rolling again. I hope. I mean, it's been 50 years - toy nostalgia usually peters out for most adults before they turn 40. Onell Design's new crossover Orbitron takes cues from its original inspiration - notably the Metaluna Mutant from This Island Earth.
